It is also an ideal venue for federal, association, and business partners whose mission relates to emergency medical services, specialty systems of care (trauma, stroke, STEMI, overdose), disaster preparedness and related matters. This year’s meeting will feature a commemoration of Freedom House Ambulance, the nation’s first paramedic level service which operated in Pittsburgh from 1967 to 1975. Made up of Black men and women recruited from the Hill District of Pittsburgh, the paramedics of Freedom House Ambulance became trailblazers as they were trained to perform advanced level care in the streets by the father of CPR, Dr. Peter Safar. Members of the pioneering EMS crew will be honored on Wednesday, May 15, with a special tribute at the NASEMSO Annual Meeting. A commemorative book dedicated to the Freedom House celebration has been created with the generous sponsorship of VFIS.
