Director of Emergency Medical Services (Alameda County, CA)

Under the direction of the Director of Health Care Services Agency, the Director of Emergency Medical Services administers the operations of the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) District of the Health Care Services Agency, a County Service Area that is funded by a special tax. The EMS program is designated by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors as the Local EMS Agency for Alameda County.  The incumbent is assigned authority and responsibility to direct the County’s Emergency Medical Services Program and to manage the operations and budget of County Service Area 1983-1, the EMS District.  To view the full job description for this classification, click here.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:  The ideal candidate for the Director of Emergency Medical Services will have substantial background in emergency medical services administration and management preferably within a governmental EMS agency. The successful candidate will have strong analytical, written and oral communication skills and will:

  • Possess knowledge and understanding of State of California Emergency Medical Services administration and legislation.
  • Be technically adept and prepared to assume the full range of organizational, policy development and administrative responsibilities over emergency service delivery for the County.
  • Be a collaborative and solid leader who leads through aligning the organization’s vision and values, and manages work groups by inspiring, advising and supervising medical professionals and paramedic staff.
  • Be a great communicator and listener, quick and clear thinking, calm under pressure
    Politically astute, possessing the abilities necessary to recognize and address divergent interests among EMS system participants.
  • Be able to identify and understand complex emergency medical and health disaster planning and responses.
  • Be forward-thinking and knowledgeable of medical quality improvement principles and practices including.
  • Possess knowledge of current trends in EMS systems.
  • Possess knowledge of designation of specialty centers.
  • Demonstrates effective evidence-based decision making.
  • Demonstrates experience managing performance-based contract administration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Health Administration, Business or Public Administration, or a field related to the work.

Experience:
The equivalent of five (5) years of progressively responsible supervisory, administrative, or programmatic experience in the field of Emergency Medical Services.License:
Possession of a valid clinical license from one the following licensing authorities for the state of California: Emergency Medical Services Authority, Board of Registered Nursing, Medical Board.
